Friday Reminders …

I think this next week maybe fairly quiet … but here are a few things coming up on the church agenda & bulletin board:

  • The church service this Sunday is dedicated to Fathers everywhere, come listen to some of the special hymns that have been dedicated to some of the fathers within our church; Worship Service is at 10:30 am; Reverend Julie Western’s sermon is appropriately titled: “A Father’s Love”. Please come earlier to enjoy learning more about the hymns and songs of religion, Joan Neal has been doing a fantastic job of keeping the class light and fun! Sunday Class begins at 9:30 am … we look forward to everyone attending!

  • It’s a Birthday Party !! Ramona Faye Stevens Bryant is turning 90 years young and her family has invited all us to celebrate with her! The celebration is an Open House Saturday, June 25th from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at 279 Terra Vista, Terre Haute. They ask for no gifts, cards only. If you can’t make the party you can send Ramona a card at 2400 Seabury, Terre Haute, IN 47803. Questions can be directed to her son, Alan Bryant at 812-236-1713.
  • The Youth Group is planning a trip to Holiday World on Mon June 27th; and would like to extend an invitation to everyone at the church to join them. They are getting a group rate pricing of $29.95/person (instead of $42.95); but at those prices they need to pre-order tickets! So let Diane Moon or Susan Rhodes know by Thursday, June 23rd.
  • We had so much fun visiting while crocheting & knitting for the Pine Ridge Reservation that we have decided to meet again! So if join us for friendship, conversation, and a way to donate to others! We will be meeting at 7:00 pm on June 28th at Jennifer Buell’s home. Hope to see you there !!

    Another Informational Friday!

    How about another quick update as to going ons and happenings!

    Remember that this Sunday is Pentecost, don’t forget to wear your red!

    Taken from UCC information: Red is the traditional color for the day of Pentecost. It is derived from the fiery flames leaping above the heads of the startled disciples. Declare Pentecost Sunday “wear red to worship day.”

    Calendar Information:

      This Sunday, June 12th:

    • Greeters are: Wayne & Peggy Burger, Starla Wilson & Karen Schafer, & Dave Amerman
    • Sunday Class begins at 9:30 am, the summer subject is ‘Learning of the Hymns’, join us in the musical fun!
    • Sunday Worship begins at 10:30 am, it is Pentecost Sunday, try to wear red, and enjoy Communion with us.
    • June Youth Meeting, at 6:00 pm in the fellowship hall, Joan Neal will be in charge of snacks for the group
      Tuesday, June 14th:

    • The Outreach Team Ministry is knitting & crocheting squares for the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. This is a working meeting of all those that would like to help make the blanket squares at 7:00 pm at Belinda Long’s home. If you need directions to Belinda’s home please contact us via email at — Clay City First UCC @ (remember no spaces!).

    • Remember the Amerman family during there time of loss; church member Don Amerman passed away June 5th, 2011; the rest of his obituary can be read at the Brazil Times.
    • Next Sunday is Father’s Day, with that Ruth Tobias is looking for hymn dedications & tributes to our fathers. Please let Ruth know what hymn to dedicate to your father next Sunday!
    • Vacation Bible School is fast approaching! Cathy Long and Joan Neal are looking for people to donate snacks for the program. If you can donate please sign up on the sheet posted on the hall-foyer bulletin board. Thank you!!

    Update Monday, June 6th

    It is time for Update Monday, a quick reminder & run down of information for us:

    Remember in prayers the Amerman Family and friends of Don Amerman. Don passed away in the early morning hours of June 5th. We will have more information regarding the Celebration of Don’s life as it is made available.

    The Christian Discovery Group is having their June Meeting tonight, be sure to join them if you have the chance. The women in the group are also running a pie booth at the Clay City Lion’s Club Pottery Festival June 11th and 12th. The women would appreciate the donation of pies! If anyone would like to make pies to donate please deliver them at the festival early Saturday morning.

    The Church Council has updated our Church Constitution & By-Laws, and has set the congregation ratification date as Sunday, June 26th immediately after worship service. The updated constitution & By-Laws are available for review on the website under announcements, the Constitution & By-Laws page, or hard printed copies can be found on the table in the church foyer.

    A quick run down of calendar information again:

    Thursday, June 9th, our Pastor will be in Indianapolis for IKC Education Day; at 6:30 pm the Church Council will meet for fellowship, followed at 7:30 pm for the monthly council meeting.

    Friday & Saturday, June 10th & June 11th, the IKC Annual Meeting in Indianapolis

    Saturday & Sunday, June 11th & June 12th, the Annual Clay City Lion’s Club Pottery Festival, with the Christian Discovery’s Pie stand.

    Sunday June 12th, 9:30 am more Christian Education with leaning of the hymns, 10:30 am worship service, 6:00 pm youth group meeting

    Informational Friday

    It is an informational Friday post, another update on happenings.

    Please join us for the new Bible School program on Sunday, June 5th at 9:30 am; yes that is this Sunday! We will be listening to hymns, learning about their heritage, and authors. I hear trivia will even be played as we learn little interesting facts about the hymns we sing. Of course stay, enjoy this Sunday’s sermon by Reverend Julie Western entitled “The Shift of Relevancy”.

    Note that the new Olive Branch is out for June. Most should have gotten delivered to email inbox; if you didn’t please use the subscribe section to the right, or visit the subscribe page to sign up for the monthly delivery. Everyone is welcome to simply view it by visiting the Olive Branch Page, where you can click on the month of choice, which in turn will open the file within your browser.

    Book for Bible StudyMonday, June 6th at 7:30 pm is the monthly Christian Discovery Meeting. The women are studying the book “Real Women, Real Faith”, this week they will be studying Lesson Two on Rebekah, directed by Lynn Stoelting. The June meeting will be held at Diane Moon’s home, please contact us view email (clay city first ucc @ (no spaces) for address and directions if you wish to attend). There is always wonderful snacks, great conversation, and wonderful fellowship!

    Thursday, June 9th will be a full day! The Pastor, Reverend Julie Western will be attending the Education Day held by the Indiana-Kentucky UCC Conference in Indianapolis. At 6:30 pm church council will have their fellowship meeting followed by the monthly council meeting at 7:30 pm.

    Friday & Saturday, June 10th & 11th is the Indiana-Kentucky Conference annual meetings.

    Next Sunday, June 12th is the monthly Youth Group Meeting at 6:00 pm, Joan Neal will be handling snacks.

    As we begin our farewell bid to our Pastor Reverend Julie Western, we also begin our search for a new Pastor. The Church Council would like to hear from anyone within the church that would be willing to be part of the search process. If you are interested please contact one of the church council members, or send an email to the church (clay city first ucc @ — no spaces).

    Busy Week Begins

    The first couple of weeks of every month come to us as meetings, sharing, and new starts. A few of those items to look into are:

    ** Thursday, June 2nd, @ noon, the Women’s Fellowship is having their June meeting at the Fellowship Hall located inside the First United Church of Christ. The women have planned a pitch-in salad luncheon, to start the meeting & fellowship. After lunch, at approximately 1:00 pm, Judy Carl will present the last part of the travelogue, IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF PAUL. Everyone is more than welcome to come! To participate in the luncheon just bring your favorite salad item! Or simply come to watch the travelogue!

    ** Thursday, June 2nd, @ 7:30 pm Clay County Habitat For Humanity Meeting. Meeting is held at the United Methodist Church in Center Point, Indiana; anyone willing to support and participate in this wonderful program is more than welcome to join us.

    ** Remember it is a new month so we have a change over of personnel assisting the church! Please check out the announcements page and/ or the calendar page to see who is the greeters this month, the alter flowers, and our companions. (Note that if you mouse over, hover over with your mouse, an item on the calender page or on the upcoming events on the right, a notation will appear, ie the names of the greeters for that service.)

    ** Sunday, June 5th, @ 9:30 am NEW Sunday Class Program !! Joan Neal has been hard at work setting up a new program for us, and I for one am very excited about it! I have heard little bits & pieces from Joan, I do know that it is the study of hymns. It sounds interesting as we learn where they came from, what they were to mean, and so much more. Join us please for this next study program!

    ** Monday, June 6th, @ 7:30 pm, the Christian Discovery Group will be having their June Meeting. This month’s meeting will be held at Diane Moon’s home. If you would like to attend please email (ClayCityFirstUCC @ , call (812-939-2520), or use the contact form to let us know, we will be happy to set up directions for you to attend!

    Condolences to the Long Family

    A long time member of the First United Church of Christ passed away yesterday morning, May 25, 2011; Mr. George Long. We wish to express our deepest sympathies to his sons Jack Long and Dick Long along with their wives, Belinda & Cathy, and all the remainder of the family and friends that are saddened in this time of loss.

    Services for George will be Saturday, at 11 a.m., at the First United Church of Christ with Reverend Julie Western officiating. Burial will follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery (across the street from the church). Visitation will be Friday, from 5-9 p.m., at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home in Clay City, and again one hour prior to services at the church. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to First United Church of Christ or to the memorial of choice.

    After the Sunday service we all joined in for some wonderful fellowship time, sharing food, games, and conversation at the Annual MaDaFaSo (Mother-Daughter-Father-Son) Dinner. Everyone was welcome as we are sure everyone is either a Mother, Daughter, Father or Son!

    Thank you for all those that helped to make it such a beautiful program all the way around!

    Join Us This Sunday, May 22nd!

    Join us this weekend, on Sunday, May 22nd …

    • 9:30 am; Sunday Classes; the adult class is studying a Marcus Borg series that is very interesting
    • 10:30 am; Worship Service, it is our Youth Sunday, that means our Youth will be running the program this Sunday! See what they put together !!
    • 11:30 am; the time is approximate, Join us in the fellowship hall after worship for our annual Ma-Da-Fa-So Banquet (that is the Mother-Daughter-Father-Son Banquet). Just bring a vegetable or salad, a dessert, and your own dinner service set. The rest will be provided, along with friendship!

    The Outreach Team has re-scheduled their meeting, instead of meeting on May 16th they will be meeting at the church on Sunday, May 22nd between the service and the banquet.
